Maria Montessori, an Italian doctor and educator, saw in children the immense potential to absorb and learn from their environment. At Christendom Academy, we offer children ages 3-6 (our kindergarteners and students' younger siblings) a formation through tangible and sensory experiences, including nature walks, culinary arts, and field trips. In doing so, we seek to cultivate in each student an appreciation of God’s creation through discovery of the world around them, ever keeping in mind the wonder that Christ himself had for his own creation and that, as St. Augustine said, "when our Lord marveled, it was to teach us at what we are to marvel."
One of the fundamental expectations for a Montessori environment is the focus on helping children to gain the confidence and assurance that they are capable and valuable contributors to their family, friends, local community, and beyond. By providing a prepared environment with activities ranging in subjects including practical life, grace and courtesy, mathematics, spatial relationships, music, art, culture, history, religion, geography, language arts, writing, sciences, and more, children are able to discover their personal developmental needs and strengths.
By offering the children the opportunity to grow in the skills they are naturally drawn towards, they are growing in confidence, self-discovery, and the desire and joy in education for its inherent good. Here at Christendom Academy, we look forward to the opportunity and honor of encouraging tomorrow’s great souls, by instilling in them today the truth of their goodness and the nobility of their aspirations.
